Reports by Kenya Flower Council indicate that the country is the third largest exporter for cut flowers in the world, accounting for about 35% of all sales in the European Union.Known for their long-lasting nature,Kenyan flowers are also very popular i Russia and the United States of America. What this figure indicates is that 3 out of 10 roses bought in Europe probably came from Kenya, making the country “Europe’s bed of roses”.
In the Western culture, holidays such as valentines are taken with high regards and treated seriously.Roses have always been the preferred gift choice during this season and doing so is regarded chivalrous.Deemed as one of nature’s most exquisite creations;their bright colors, fragrance, innocence and beauty is almost second to none. And although many citations can be pointed as to why roses are the proffered gift choice to the partner during this season, the fact remains that they are a true symbol of purity of love.
So what exactly does this mean for the Kenyan tropical farm dealing in roses? The floriculture industry constitutes about 2.8% of the country’s GDP.For a country with an estimated GDP of 55.24 Billion Dollars according to trade-economics,business couldn’t be better.
However important to also note is the delicacy of handling the business, the bureaucracy that comes along with setting up a tropical rose flower and the patience needed to make the business flourish. The industry has seen continually growth over the years, with new players coming in and the huge farms no longer dominating the scene. As the paradigm shifts, we as Valentine Growers Co. Ltd have remained true to our values of providing quality and affordable products to our market.
